How to Properly Care for Your Sweaters

It’s prime sweater weather! When it’s cold outside, you know you want to grab your favorite, comfy sweater and never take it off. For the next couple of chilly months, it’ll be your best friend. Which means, it might get a little worn out from all of the love it’s been getting. Luckily, these sweaters can be durable and last you years and years with the right care. Check out my tips for caring for your sweaters throughout the season below!

Tackle pilling with this handy dandy Fabric Defuzzer by Conair.

I’ve shared my love of this item before, but cannot stress how nice this is to have on hand for your sweaters. It’s very easy to use and currently under $12!

Make sure you are thoroughly reading the care instructions!

I know it seems trivial, but you’ll regret it if you don’t. Machine washing a dry clean only sweater can really damage the item. Some sweaters even need to be hand washed. This isn’t necessarily fun but will extend the life of the sweater. I often double-check the care instructions before even buying sweaters so I can avoid those hand wash items.

Do not hang your sweaters.

Hanging will stretch out the fabric and ruin the shape. Sweaters can properly be stored by folding or rolling. This will preserve the piece’s shape for years to come!

Fold sweaters over the hanger.

However, if you like your clothes hung, fold it over the hanger like a pair of pants.

Do not pull on loose threads or snags.

Even though it is SO hard to resist, try your best not to pull on loose threads. Nothing is worse than a sweater unraveling because of one little pull. Pull the snag through the inside of the sweater to be safe.
