Happy first day of fall! In honor of this national holiday, I am raising my pumpkin spice latte while bundling up in my fuzzy blanket (except not really because it’s still 85 degrees in New York) and making a toast to all of you sweater weather loving folk out there! Fall is the best.
However, transitioning from summer to fall is always a grey area. How do we make our summer clothes stretch for as long as possible?! Here are some tips for transitioning your summer pieces into fall outfits!
Layer up – Wear a cropped sweater over a button down blouse or over a dress. If you haven’t invested in your “staple sweater” head to the nearest Zara pronto. You will look cute and you will thank yourself while you are shivering waiting for the subway/bus/work carpool partner/”insert mode of transportation here”.
Add deeper hues – This is the simplest way to have a more “fall” look. It’s time to break out your army green coat and dusty cedar (a fall 2016 Pantone color!) turtle neck. If your clothes stray more towards brighter hues, accessories with those darker colors. Add a brown floral scarf or a grey handbag!
Invest in that perfect jacket – I would be lost without my jean jacket. It goes with just about everything and is so easy to throw on as you’re running out the door! I like more of an oversized fit, so I bought mine from the men’s department at Urban Outfitters. (Side note, menswear is THE best!! Don’t be afraid to go into the men’s section of a store and check it out! You may suprise yourself…) You also can’t go wrong with a statement jacket, which is probably my favorite part of a fall wardrobe! There’s so many fun new ways to spice up your outfit and stay warm at the same time!
Change up your shoes – Walk away from those strappy sandals and pair your summer dress with some over the knee boots or suede pumps! Get yourself a black pair and these will save your life and go with any outfit!
Add tights – Play with your wardrobe and add some prints and colors! Wear tights under a dress/skirt or switch it up and wear a pair under shorts! This is a perfect way to extend the life of your favorite summer pieces.
And finally, break the rules!! White after Labor Day? I am a huge fan. Black with navy? Go for it. Mix your prints and have fun this fall! After all, rules are meant to be broken right?
