My Name is Hillary Conheady and I am a shopaholic. And since I moved to New York after graduation last May, I’ve had to learn to cut down on spending a little bit. Ok ok… a lot a bit. While managing money for rent, groceries, and every day needs, I’ve also had to set some money aside for new clothing for posts, photography sessions, and props (an $8 magazine or bouquet of flowers really does add up!!). Therefore, I’ve had to become smart about where I am buying from, how I am shopping, and what I do with my money. For example, believe it or not, this skirt is $15!! I waited until this bad boy went on sale and snagged it for an unbelievable price! Here are a few shopping/saving tips I’ve learned along the way!
1. Sell some of your old and gently used clothing, accessories, shoes, etc. on Poshmark! I recently started my Poshmark page (@hillheady) and have become obsessed! You can buy/sell almost everything on here! Everyday the app hosts “events” such as “best in dresses” or “workplace attire” where you can search items you may be interested in! It’s also a fun way to connect with people!
2. Check out local sample sales! Sample sales are THE BEST! I bought this amazing rainbow sweater recently from an Elizabeth and James sample sale. It retails at over $300 and I purchased it for $68 – a steal! I also bought this Celine bag at an outrageously cheap price at a sample sale! For all my New Yorkers, check out Prive Sample Sales at Chelsea Market or follow @260samplesale on Instagram to stay in the loop!
3. Look into subscription boxes such as Rocksbox, Birchbox, or Le Tote! Rocksbox is a great way to try out new and trendy jewelry without actually making the commitment of purchasing pieces. For $21 a month, you can rent 3 pieces. Use “hillheadyxoxo” for your first box free!!! Birchbox is also perfect for makeup and hair care products. Another great way to try out travel size items before dropping cash for a full size bottle of moisturizer. I haven’t actually tried Le Tote, but I’ve heard great things! (If anyone has this subscription, give me all the deets!!)
4. Consider shopping somewhere you wouldn’t normally buy from! Target is my go to for dollar section decorations and fancy baskets, but now I’m dying to buy everything from their clothing section! Their Who What Wear collection (featured in one of my first posts!!) is so chic and affordable! Target is also partnering with Victoria Beckham for a collection that will come out on April 9th! (Yes, I’ve marked my calendar!)
5. Finally, as hard as it may be, sleep on it for a couple days. I’ve done this with many of my “big purchases” recently, and there have been many that I’ve pushed aside for now and will check back in a few weeks to see if it has gone on sale! I hate when I see something that I bought for full price get marked down not long after. There are very few things that we should be buying for full price these days!!
Hope these tips will help your wallet a little bit! Happy shopping!
